Nikon D80 User Report by Mark LaMonica
The Nikon D80 digital camera retails just under
$1,000.00 and boasts some heavy duty technical
features that will have you wondering why you
haven’t gone digital yet!
The first thing I noticed was the weight and since
my backpack averages 63 pounds of camera
gear, a 1.5 lb. Camera body was looking really
good. Here’s what you need to know up front.
This is a polycarbonate body and is not designed
as a serious professional camera in terms of
being sealed against dust and moisture. The
professional version D200 sports a magnesium-
alloy body and extra sealing features to handle
extreme environments faced by some
photographers and retails at $1,699.95
Image quality is top priority for me and it also
keeps my clients coming back. I had no problem
on assignment with the D70s at 6.1 million
effective pixels and it produced beautiful prints.
The D80 is taking that one step further by having
10.2 million effective pixels, an array of in camera
retouching tools like D-lighting, red-eye
correction, trim, monochrome, filter effects, small
picture, image overlay and it even has a Black
and White mode with custom filter effects. The
highlight warning and RGB histogram provide all
the information you need after each shot to
ensure the image is exactly how you want it for
the final output.
My advice is, if you haven’t gone digital yet, then
this is the camera to do it with. Take time to read
the manual and experiment with each feature and
check your results, because after all, you are
shooting onto SD cards and getting instant
feedback to see how well you are doing.
After you master the camera and feel confident
with how it will handle different situations, then
venture out into the untamed world and watch the
D80 capture each subject with ease. Remember
the camera is only as good as the operator, so
please read the manual and experiment first.
So how does this camera perform in the field?
Quite well I must say! It's fast, right on with
exposures and puts out fabulous 16” x 24” prints.
Pictures in my web site taken with the D80 have a
center designation of D80
(sample A-D80-001).
